Honeymoons this Travel Tuesday on VM1 Elaine

This week we are getting ‘Romantic’ on the Elaine show and looking at places to go on Honeymoon. Starting off with one of the most romantic Caribbean islands…

Barbados

Barbados is the most easterly of the Caribbean islands and where the Atlantic Ocean kisses the east coast so it also can have spectacular wild waves and scenery great for surfing. The warm shallow Caribbean waters of the west coast are host to sea turtles and long sandy beaches. Everywhere you go you will hear reggae and Bajan music and don’t forget to try the Mount Gay rum. Crop over is the party time of year and that goes on for a solid month and starts at the end of July – traditionally this is when the sugar cane crop was harvested. There are lots of good reasons to chose Barbados and the year round good weather is one reason that makes it so suitable for honeymooners – it is also incredibly safe and the spoken language is English. I’ve listed some more reasons below.

Local kids cooling off in Bridgetown
  1. Bridgetown is the capital of Barbados and it is a garrison town and really interesting to wander around. I picked up a catamaran with Cool Runnings and it is one of the must do activities on the island. The crew are very encouraging and stayed with me while we swam for turtles as I’m a nervous swimmer.see the link to their video by clicking here https://www.coolrunningsbarbados.com/cruise_video.html or check out my dance moves on youtube
  2. Get a reggae bus to Ostins fish fry on a Friday night – we started our holiday with stay at a brand new hotel in Ostins called the Abidah, This is a quiet resort and mainly residential apart from the fish fries on Fridays. The Abidah offers excellent food and every suite has a hot tub on the balcony and sea views.

  3. Other places to stay – the Elegant resorts are a chain of Bajan Hotels dotted around the island and for honeymooners Treasure Beach is an adult only resort and sister to the Tamarind on the west coast. The beach is idyllic and I recommend it highly for exploring the west part of the island and places such as Holetown and Speightstown
  4. Sandals is a name that sits with romance and all of their properties are adult only and all inclusive. They are several Sandals Resorts on islands around the Caribbean but we stayed at the new Royal Sandals on the south coast which is yet another step above paradise. We arrived back to our room one evening to a rose petal path that lead to our balcony bath tub – with a bottle of champagne on tap.
  5. Another evening we decided to play bowling after dinner and you can be as active or as chilled as you wish in a Sandals resort.

  6. Finally I didn’t mention the best bit – we had a butler! Two actually * who were attentive 24 hours a day

Sicily

I spent (ahem!) ‘one’ of my honeymoons on the largest Mediterranean Island, Sicily. I can’t recommend this island highly enough and plan to go back there for my summer holidays this year. This package below is a luxury resort and Taormina is the most romantic spot on the Island and travelling with Topflight the Italian Specialists.

Perfect for a romantic getaway or just a well deserved, relaxing break, Baia Taormina Grand Palace Hotel and Spa is a luxury hotel with heavenly views of the breathtaking bay, after which it was named.

Baia Taormina Grand Palace Hotel & Spa

Taormina, Sicily

Sat 28 Sep 2019 for 7 nights

Bed & Breakfast basis

€1698 for two people

topflight.ie or call 01-2401784

Chiselled into the side of a cliff, its natural stone archways and local materials blend beautifully with its surroundings, giving it a romantic and secluded feel.

Gardens cascade down the hillside leading to two outdoor pools overlooking the Bay of Taormina. The spa centre offers fantastic wellness treatments to help you relax and recharge your batteries, and there’s a wealth of activities available nearby, including golfing, water-skiing, snorkeling and windsurfing.

Enjoy dining on the beautiful terrace each morning and watching the sun rising over the vast expanse of twinkling water in the bay far below as you set yourself up for the day. Breakfast is buffet style with plenty of options to choose from, including an omelette and crepe bar which are made up to order.

Situated 8km from the resort, this hotel is ideal for those who want to escape the crowds, however, for those days when you do want to enjoy a bit of hustle bustle, you can hop on the shuttle bus (payable locally), which will have you at the town centre or private beach in minutes. Or you can make use of the hotel’s private beach, with its own private entrance at the foot of the hill that the hotel is situated on. The use of the beach is included in the price and beach towels are provided in the hotel rooms.

Cast yourself to somewhere private, to an island dazzling and undisturbed. Imagine powder white sand caressing the pristine beach and hidden turquoise lagoons home to breathtaking coral reefs. Dream of luxury, floating blissfully into oblivion and elegant yet naturally simplistic villa coupled with sophisticated technology, cocooned by gorgeous scenery.
