As part of its 2017 opera programme, RTÉ lyric fm’s Marty Whelan returns to Italy this year giving fans an introduction to some of the most loved operas in the world at spectacular venues in Rome and Verona as they enjoy a relaxing Italian vacanza at the same time.

Marty will join each Travel Department group before the performance for a meet and greet, some exciting photo opportunities, and to share his knowledge of the particular opera. Throughout the rest of the holiday, Travel Department customers will enjoy excursions with local tour guides as well as plenty of free time to explore or relax at their leisure.

During this magical holiday, explore the historic towns that hug the coast of Lake Garda and stroll through quaint streets and squares, all set in the tranquil surroundings of blue waters and towering mountains. On your fourth evening, you will take in an unforgettable performance of Puccini’s ‘Madame Butterfly’ at the Arena di Verona, which is sure to leave you spellbound. First performed in 1904 this Italian tragedy in three acts is the story of an American sailor who marries and abandons a young Japanese geisha in Nagasaki.


There are two further excursions included in this 7-night holiday. In Venice, gaze upon St. Mark’s Basilica; watch gondolas sail along the canals, and admire the stunning piazzas, bridges and gothic buildings that make this city so magnificent. You will also take a guided boat trip to view some of the beautiful sites and places of interest on the lake, including stops in the towns of Malcesine and Limone.

With the serene waters of Lake Garda, the unique beauty of Venice, and the classic Italian romance of Verona, this trip to Italy is the perfect combination of opera, culture and history.

Join RTÉ Lyric fm’s Marty Whelan for a night at the opera in the ‘Eternal City’ of Rome. Based in the picturesque spa town of Fiuggi, 60km southeast of the capital, you are ideally placed to visit the incomparable cities of Rome, Perugia and Assisi. Umbria’s green valleys and mountains form a pristine backdrop to the resplendent art city of Perugia, while Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis, is one of the world’s most cherished places of pilgrimage.

On an expertly guided tour of Rome, you will take in famous landmarks such as the Colosseum and the iconic Trevi fountain, and enjoy a memorable visit to the Vatican – viewing St Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums and the revered Sistine Chapel. A second visit to this wonderful city will involve a visit to the Teatro dell’Opera for an unforgettable performance of Puccini’s ‘Tosca’, accompanied by Marty Whelan. This Italian tragedy in three acts is set in Rome during the Napoleonic Wars and is the story of a love triangle with a strong female character at its core.
