Travel Tuesday goes to Spain and gets in the fast lane at FerrariLand

Spain is one of the most popular destinations for Irish Travellers with 1.4 million visiting for their holidays last year. I’ve picked some books to read to whet your appetite and entice you to return this year.

I’ve picked two regions which have lots to offer in Catalonia and Andalucia. Novelist Kate McCabe spends the winter months living in Fuengirola and writes wonderfully warm evocative books set in Andalucia, the gorgeous region in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. Hugely popular with Irish visitors it is serviced by several flights daily during the summer to Malaga. If this isn’t your first time visiting then I recommend taking a car and going to some of the beauty spots such as Mijas and Ronda which also feature in Kate’s books.

Mijas

Set on a spectacular clifftop the town of Ronda is also the setting for other popular novelists books including one of my favourite authors Ernest Hemingway. Seville isn’t that far away either and a must for those seeking to immerse themselves in the most authentic Andalucia. It’s a world away from the high-rise resorts along the coast and the drive along the windy cliff top roads  is spectacular. Travel to the coast from Seville and there is Cadiz and the home of sherry, Jerez.

Also by Kate McCabe The Spanish Letter is an intriguing read about a woman who reads a letter sent to her mother and opens a web of secrets that make wonderfully emotive read.

Colm Toibin’s travelogue Homage To Barcelona is a good read for those looking for a taste of the culture of Catalonia. In this book Toibin describes what it’s like to live in this vibrant city in the 1970’s.

If you are travelling to Barcelona this summer the must see sites inside the city are too many to visit but if you have the kids with you and want to taste some culture then why not take a picnic at Parc Guell and follow up with a visit to the Science museum Cosmo Caixa is a must.

If you’re a big kid yourself and a fan of fast cars then only an hour away is the resort of Salou and home to the hugely popular Portaventura World. This April saw the opening of Ferrari Land, the first theme park dedicated to lovers of the iconic brand and Formula 1 racing team. I’d recommend bringing any discerning car lover to enjoy the 11 thrilling rides and Europe’s tallest and fastest roller coaster Red Force.

Reach speeds of 180km in 5 seconds and get to feel what it’s really like to be a formula 1 racing driver!

An hour along the coast in the opposite direction from Barcelona is the town Figueras and this is a must see for culture vultures and lovers of the artist Salvador Dali.

Dali Museum Figueras

A treasury of the surrealist artists finest work is on display in this amazing museum which also holds the burial chamber and many of his finest artworks

In fact I love Andalucia and Catalonia so much that they both feature in several of the most important scenes in my sixth novel Six Postcards Home. Available to buy on Amazon Kindle buy on amazon
