Travel Tuesday Newstalk FM we are talking cruises.

Have you ever thought about going on a cruise? Only 4% of Irish holiday makers choose a cruise but it’s becoming the largest growth area and for good reason. Long seen as a holiday for the newly wed and nearly dead, the new variety of ships available offer a route and brand to suit everyone’s needs. Cruising offers something for everyone, families, adventurers, those on a budget and those looking for something different. you wont feel confined on new ships, especially if you book a balcony cabin. Balcony cabins are completely private and offer uninterrupted views of the sea and coastline. With security and safety an ever increasing concern for Irish Holiday makers, cruising satisfies on many fronts.

What happens when you arrive on board your cruise?

Your cabin key acts like your passport and this is also used a credit card around the ship so it is your currency. this means you need to be careful not to spend without thinking but you can check up on your account daily from the TV in your cabin. Taking one of the drinks packages which works out at about $200 is a great way to ensure you don’t go over budget.

You can expect to ‘Switch off’ from the moment you step on board. A new ships takes time to get used to as many of them are so big, but this is all part of the enjoyment of the trip

All inclusive element makes it ideal for families – you can budget easier than on other types of holidays because your food is catered for. Quality of food in general is extremely high on the 4* cruises and some offer specialised culinary cruises.

For me the best thing about cruising is the novelty of waking up in a different country without having to pack a bag or take a flight.

I’ve picked three types of cruises and start with Celebrity cruises, a five star brand and I recommend them for those seeking modern luxury. The age group varies on board and with a mixture of honeymooners, empty nesters and older families taking up much of the ship. Their routes are worldwide with so many options you will find the perfect cruise to suit your tastes.

An exciting new route out of Dublin starts next summer and takes guests to Iceland. This may be the ideal way to sample your first cruise as it takes out the need for a flight. Stopping at Cobh and Belfast before travelling up to Reykjavik it will give passengers a chance to sample the luxury on board. The spa and gym area are always popular and with indoor and and outdoor hot
