If, like me, you love a winter twixmas break, then this is the time of year to book it. I think I may have found the perfect one too and easily accessed from the east and south of the country. Entering The Manor House at Mount Juliet Estate is like stepping into a bit of heaven. The elegant foyer is an amuse bouche of Georgian elegance.
Plush purple velvet carpet covers the staircase and murals fill the panels throughout the hall. It’s the warm welcome from Robert on reception that adds the personal touch I never take for granted in Irish Country Houses.
Each room is named after a famous figure associated with the property since it became home to the first Earl of Carrick and his wife, Juliet, in 1750. This time I’m staying in a newly refurbished suite overlooking the meandering green fields below. The ensuite is generous with a bath, as well as a shower – a winner for me.
Mark Dunne, the general manager, takes me on a tour of the house and jokes that he never thought he’d have a story teller on his book of employees. But Mount Juliet is no ordinary country mansion. In May the President of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde stayed with other bankers to discuss the future pace of rate cuts. Over breakfast she commented how much she loved the egg cups and was gifted some, much to her delight, on checking out.
If Lady Helen was still around I’m sure she would approve of her namesake being used at The Michelin Star Restaurant in Mount Juliet. Swaddled in a cocoon of peach with elegant stucco décor, this idyllic setting overlooks the River Nore. I’m excited for the delicious tasting menu to start. Earlier in the day I met Head Chef John Kelly and again during delivery of our main course. The tasting menu starts with a mackerel cone flavoured with lemon, horseradish and caviar and was followed by layers of treats, the highlight for me being the lobster bouillabaisse. One of the desserts is infused with honey, just one of the ingredients harvested directly from the estate. The wine pairing is served with expertise by the French sommelier who takes us on a journey through Euope’s finest vineyards as he describes each course.
Fishing has long been a draw to Mount Juliet. Many famous names have sat next to the peaceful waters below, from Tiger Woods to Pierce Brosnan and Gabriel Byrne. John Walsh, the head porter, is keeper of many tales collected during his 25 years working at the estate. Apparently Past US President, Jimmy Carter, sneaked away to fish while there on a trip to discuss climate change with The Elders in 2010. Residents can Fly Fish from the 17th of March until the end of September annually.
Twixmas Time can often be temperate so at Mount Juliet there’s much for outdoor lovers to do on the estate. Playing the Jack Nicklaus designed golf course is a big draw and the grounds are filled with walking paths. If, horse-riding is your pleasure then the equestrian school offers wonderful trails under expert and safe supervision that’s great for all the family. The leisure facilities include a newly revamped pool and exercise centre oozing with the luxury you can expect from this five star property.
The Manor House is home to the 1757 bar where the estates own brewed gin is served. Tucked away next to it is a twelve-seater cinema, with three different viewing options throughout the day. So if the weather isn’t kind you can curl up next to the open fires or catch a movie. The gorgeous Mount Juliet is a year round destination but I think I may have found the perfect spot for a Twixmas Break.
